Contaminated zones (commonly called gas zones) are areas of Chernarus filled with toxic, airborne contamination. Entering one without proper NBC protection will rapidly drain your health. They are among the most dangerous areas on the map — but also contain some of the best loot in the game.
On Shadows of Chernarus, gas zones are 100% vanilla DayZ — no mods alter or add to them. What you experience here is exactly what you'd find on any official Bohemia Interactive Chernarus server.
You must wear a complete NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) suit to survive inside a contaminated zone. Missing any single piece will result in gas exposure and health loss.
| Slot | Required Item | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Gas Mask (NBC or GP-5) | Must be in good condition. Attach a filter. |
| Filter | NBC Filter | Each filter has limited charges — carry spares. |
| Body | NBC Suit (jacket + pants) | Both jacket and pants required. |
| Hands | NBC Gloves | Cannot substitute regular gloves. |
| Feet | NBC Boots | Cannot substitute regular boots. |
These zones are permanently active. They do not move or despawn. Approach them at any time and the gas will be there.
Three overlapping zones cover the entire length of the rusting cargo ship wreck. The bow and stern each have a 60m radius zone; the center has a 100m radius zone. Rises 20–22m above deck. Excellent military and industrial loot.
Four zones blanket the full military compound — one uphill to the north (100m radius) and three spread across the southern buildings (60–75m each). High-tier military loot. Approach from upwind to avoid being caught off-guard at the outer edge.
Two small zones (25m radius each) cover the coastal prison compound. Tight, close-quarters contamination. The smaller radius means the edge of the zone can surprise players who don’t see the gas cloud in time.
In addition to the fixed zones, 2 to 4 dynamic contaminated zones are always active somewhere on the map at any given time. These zones continuously move between over 1,400 preset positions spread across all of Chernarus — military bases, airfields, industrial areas, and towns.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Active at once | 2–4 zones simultaneously |
| Zone radius | 75 metres |
| Duration | 35 minutes per location, then relocates |
| Possible positions | 1,435 preset spawn points across the entire map |
| Advance warning | None — no in-game notification when a zone appears |
High-risk locations where dynamic zones frequently appear include Northwest Airfield (NWAF), Tisy Military Base, Vybor Military Base, Zelenogorsk Military, and the Northeast Airfield (NEAF) — all prime military loot areas. The dynamic zones are what most players encounter unexpectedly.
Are the gas zones on this server custom or vanilla?
100% vanilla. No mods on Shadows of Chernarus alter the contaminated zone system. The static locations (Shipwreck, Pavlovo, Little Rify Prison) and the dynamic roaming zones are exactly as Bohemia Interactive designed them for Chernarus.
How do I know if a dynamic zone has appeared at a military base I’m looting?
There is no server announcement. Your only warning is the visible gas cloud and the pulsing screen overlay when you enter the zone radius. Keep your NBC gear accessible — not packed at the bottom of a bag — whenever you are in a military area.
Can I die instantly from walking into a gas zone unprotected?
Not instantly, but damage is rapid and continuous. Unprotected exposure will kill an otherwise healthy player in under a minute in a dense zone. Do not try to “quickly grab loot” without protection.
Do gas zones affect vehicles?
Vehicles themselves are unaffected, but players inside vehicles are not protected from contamination. You still need full NBC gear even when driving or flying through a zone.
How long does contamination last after I leave the zone?
The contaminated status clears automatically within about 30–60 seconds after leaving the zone boundary. No action required.
Is the gas zone at the Shipwreck worth the risk?
Yes — the wreck is one of the most reliable sources of high-tier military loot on the map and is often overlooked because it requires NBC gear to access. The zone is static so it never moves, making it predictable and plannable.
